"10,000 Maniacs" was founded as "Still Life" in the year 1981 in the town of Jamestown, New York, by keyboard player Dennis Drew, bassist Steve Gustafson, drummer Chet Cardinale, guitarist Robert Buck, and vocalist Terry Newhouse. Natalie Merchant, who was just seventeen at the time was asked to perform some vocals with the group.
John Lombardo who was at the time, part of a group known as "The Mills," and played occasionally with "Still Life," was asked to join the group as a permanent member playing guitar and as a vocalist. Terry Newhouse and Chet Cardinale quit the band in the summer, and it was then that Natalie Merchant became the lead vocalist. A succession of drummers came and went, and the group changed its name to "Burn Victims," and later settled on "10,000 Maniacs," inspired by the low-budget horror movie Two Thousand Maniacs!.
