"38 Special" (can also be written ".38 Special" and "Thirty-Eight Special") was named for firearm manufacturer Smith & Wesson's .38 Special cartridge. The band was started by Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1975, who were friends in Jacksonville, Florida. Donnie's older brother Ronnie was vocalist for the group "Lynyrd Skynyrd" until his death in an airplane crash with other members of the group. Another brother, Johnny, is currently "Lynyrd Skynyrd's" lead singer.
Starting in the early 1980's, "38 Special" started combining blues and arena rock into their material, and as a result, were rewarded with a number of successful albums and singles. "38 Special's" song "Trooper With An Attitude" was utilized for the opening sequence song of the movie Super Troopers, which was released in 2001.
The current members of the group are guitarist and vocalist Don Barnes, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Donnie Van Zant, guitarist Danny Chauncey, bass player Larry Junstrom, keyboard player Bobby Capps, and drummer Gary Moffatt.
