Before the Ants, Adam Ant (real name Stuart Leslie Goddard) was a bassist in pub rock group called "Bazooka Joe," now remembered as the group that headlined when the "Sex Pistols" performed their first show in the fall of 1975, at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. After seeing the performance, Adam quit the band and start his own group with the inspiration he got from the "Sex Pistols."
Calling the group the "B-sides" in the beginning they rehearsed frequently for months but, without a drummer, they never managed to land themselves an actual job. "Adam Ant" had become acquainted with some influential figures in the London punk scene, particularly Jordan, who had worked in Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's SEX boutique store.
"The Ants" formed in early months of 1977 and was comprised of Lester Square on guitar, Andy Warren playing bass and Paul Flanagan on drums. Lester Square decided to leave the group to finish art school and later formed "The Monochrome Set" just before the "Ants" landed their first gig during May 1977, at Muswell Hill. Mark Ryan stepped in to replace Square on guitar and played the first gigs and also recorded Plastic Surgery, as well as a few unreleased demos. He was later replaced by Johnny Bivouac in October of 1977.
