"The Beatles" were a rock-pop phenomenon hailing from Liverpool, England that formed in 1960. During their amazing career, the group most people know as "The Beatles" was made up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They started out with music that was heavily influenced by 1950s rock and roll and skiffle, but the group experimented with different musical genres, ranging all the way from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock and roll.
Their clothing, hair styles and philosophy transformed them into instant trend-setters, while their growing social awareness extended their influence into the revolutions of the 1960s. After the group broke up in 1970, the four members each embarked upon successful solo careers of their own.
"The Beatles" were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the entire history of popular music and are still considered one of the primary influences of popular music to this day. Having sold over one billion records the world over, in the United Kingdom alone, The Beatles released more than 40 singles, albums, and EPs that reached the number one spot on the charts, which put them on record for earning more number one albums (fifteen) than any other group in British chart history.
Their commercial success was certainly not limited to the U.K., and EMI estimated that by 1985 they had sold over one billion records worldwide. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, "The Beatles" have sold more albums in the U.S. than any other musical group. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "The Beatles" at the very top of their list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. According to Rolling Stone, "The Beatles'" innovative music and cultural influence helped define the 1960s, and the influence of "The Fab Four" on pop culture is still quite evident today. In 2008, Billboard magazine released its list of top-selling Hot 100 artists to celebrate the chart's fiftieth anniversary and "The Beatles" once again landed in the number on spot.
