William Martin "Billy" Joel was born May 9, 1949 and went on to become a successful rock musician, singer-songwriter, and classical composer. His his first hit song, "Piano Man", came out in the year 1973. The Recording Industry Association of America cites Billy Joel as the sixth best-selling recording artist in the United States.

Joel had Top 10 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s and has a total of 33 Top 40 hits in the United States. Joel is also a five-time Grammy Award winner, a 23-time Grammy nominee and has sales in excess of 150 million albums worldwide to his credit. Billy Joel was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame during 1992 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. He has also been honored by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

Joel announced his retirement from recording in 1993 but continued to tour, and in 2001, he released Fantasies & Delusions, a CD of classical compositions for the piano. During 2007, he returned to pop songwriting and recording for a short time and released a single entitled "All My Life" -- a song he wrote for his third wife Katie Lee Joel. Previously, Joel was married to model Christie Brinkley for nearly ten years before they divorced.

Joel decided to resume touring in 2006 after a three-year break from the road and has been touring extensively since that time, performing at venues in many of the world's most important cities. In March of 2009, Joel resumed his popular Face to Face tour with the accompaniment of fellow pop music star Sir Elton John. The tour has a somewhat intermittent schedule for two years as it travels the globe. The two artists first collaborated in 1994 but had not toured together since May of 2003.
