William Haislip Squier was born on May 12, 1950 in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and was brought up in a lower middle class household. When Squier was nine years old, his grandfather taught him how to play the piano. Squier then took lessons from his grandfather for two years. After he stopped the piano lessons, he became interested in learning to play guitar and bought one from a neighbor for $95. Squier took guitar lessons for a short time until he decided on the idea of teaching himself instead. By the time he was 15, he had mastered the instrument.

Billy Squier's first public performance was at a nightclub called the Psychedelic Supermarket in New York City during 1968 where he saw Eric Clapton and his band "Cream" perform. Squier originally performed with the band "Magic Terry & The Universe," which also included Klaus Flouride, who later went on to play with "The Dead Kennedys."

Squier then performed with "The Sidewinders" that came on the scene during the early 1970s. During that time, Squier played with members including Mike Reed, Alex Phillips, Henry Stern, and Bryan Chase. Squier decided to leave the group to form the group "Piper," which released two albums in the mid seventies, Piper and Can't Wait, but the group disbanded soon after.

Bruce Kulick of "KISS" fame played with Squier during that time period as well. Upon reviewing the debut album"Piper," Circus magazine praised it as the greatest debut album ever produced by an American rock band. "Piper" and "KISS" shared the same management organization, and Squier got a break by opening for "KISS" for some of their most notable performances during their 1977 tour.

Squier enjoyed a string of arena rock hits during the 1980's and is probably best remembered for "The Stroke," which appeared on his 1981 album "Don't Say No." Other Billy Squier hits include "In the Dark", "Rock Me Tonite", "Lonely Is the Night", "My Kinda Lover", "Everybody Wants You", "All Night Long" and "Emotions in Motion".
