"Black Sabbath" are an British heavy metal rock band which was founded in Birmingham in 1968 by vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitar player Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and percussionist Bill Ward. The group's history has seen them work through numerous personnel changes, with a whopping total of twenty-two former members.
Originally founded as a heavy blues-rock group named "Earth," they began incorporating occult- and horror-inspired lyrics with tuned-down guitars. Appropriately enough they decided to change their name to "Black Sabbath" and released multiple gold and platinum albums in the 1970s. The group has sold over 15 million records in the United States alone.
"Black Sabbath" is considered one of the first and most influential heavy metal bands of all time, the group was a key contributor to definition the genre with releases such as 1970's Paranoid which was certified quadruple-platinum.
Frontman Ozzy Osbourne was fired from the band in 1979, and was replaced by former "Rainbow" vocalist Ronnie James Dio. The group worked its way through a revolving lineup during the 1980s and 1990s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin. Finally, in 1997 original lineup reunited with Osbourne and they released a live album, Reunion, which spawned the Grammy Award-winning single "Iron Man" in 2000, coming 30 years after the song's first release as part of the album Paranoid.
During the early years of the 1980's a line-up featuring Iommi, Butler, Dio, and Vinny Appice regrouped in 2006 using the name "Heaven and Hell," a title that was taken from the 1980 "Black Sabbath" song and album of the same name. In February 2009, "Heaven and Hell" said that they are working on a new album, The Devil You Know, with a planned release date during April of 2009.
