"Blondie" is an rock band that first broke into the mainsteam during the 1970s and has sales of over 50 million albums to their credit. The group was a early pioneer in the American new wave and punk rock scenes. The group's first two albums were obvioulsy influenced by those genres. "Blondie" was successful in the United Kingdom as well as in Australia, but was considered an underground band in the United States. That changed with the release of Parallel Lines in 1978.
For the next three years, they earned for themselves several hit singles and the group was noted for their mix of musical styles which incorporated elements of disco, pop and reggae, while at the same time, retaining a basic style as a new wave group. Even with their success, several factors conspired against the longevity of the group.
Lead vocalist Deborah Harry achieved a level of celebrity that began to eclipse that of other band members. Their album The Hunter, released during 1982, was not a commercial success. In addition, key member Chris Stein was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. These circumstances led the group to disband in 1982.
As members pursued other projects, "Blondie's" reputation increased over the following decade and the group reformed in 1997, achieving renewed success and a number one single in the U.K. with "Maria" in the year 1999. The group toured and performed around the world over the following years, and was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the RockWalk of Fame in 2006.
