David Bowie was born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947 and is best known as a British musician, actor, record producer and arranger. On the scene for five decades of pop music, and well-known as an artist who frequently reinvented himself, David Bowie is widely recognized as an innovator, especially for his work in the 1970's.
He has been cited as an influence by numerous musicians. Bowie is also known for his signature baritone voice and the intellectual depth and creativity of his work. David Bowie first caught the attention of the public in 1969, when the Apollo space program-inspired "Space Oddity" climbed in among the top five of the U.K. singles chart.
In 1975, he achieved his first major U.S. crossover success with the number-one single "Fame", which was co-written with former Beatle John Lennon. After mixed commercial success in the late 1970's, Bowie enjoyed U.K. number one hits with the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes" and the album it was launched from, "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)." He teamed up with fellow British rockers Queen for the 1981 U.K. chart-topping hit track "Under Pressure."
In a poll conducted by the BBC during 2002, Bowie ranked 29 out of the Greatest 100 Britons. Bowie has sold an estimated 136 million albums, and he ranks among the 10 best-selling acts in U.K. pop history. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 39th on their list of the 100 Greatest Rock Artists of All Time in 2004.
