"Genesis" formed in 1967 in England. With about 150 million albums sold worldwide, they are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time. The group won a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Concept Music Video.
The longest-serving members of the group are Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks. Members who have come and gone include Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett. "Genesis" started out as a 1960's pop band known for their moody, simple keyboard-intensive melodies.
The 1970s saw the group evolve into a progressive rock band, adopting complex song structures and technically elaborate instrumental work. Their concerts were known for innovative stage designs, pyrotechnics, elaborate costumes and stories that were woven into the performance.
During the 1980's, the group created a more accessible pop music sound based on melodic hooks, which rewarded them with their first number one album in the United Kingdom and their only number one single in the United States, "Invisible Touch".
"Genesis" has worked its way through a number of personnel changes over the years. Founding member Anthony Phillips was more-or-less forced to leave the group in 1970 due to problems stemming from stage fright.
In 1975, Phil Collins, the band's drummer at the time, replaced Gabriel as lead vocalist after giving up on an extensive search for a replacement. To help facilitate the move to lead vocals for Collins, Bill Bruford, and later Chester Thompson, sat in on drums for the group during live shows, with Collins taking up his old position during lengthy instrumental passages.
After Phil Collins' departure in 1996, "Genesis" added Ray Wilson to the line-up and he appeared on the 1997 album Calling All Stations. The album was not commercially successful and the group decided to go on indefinite hiatus.
During 2007, Banks, Collins and Rutherford reunited for a 20-city tour of Europe and North America, which included a free concert at Rome's Circo Massimo with 500,000 fans in attendance.
