"Iron Butterfly," a psychedelic rock and early heavy metal band, perhaps best known for their 1968 hit single "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". They are considered an early heavy metal group as a result of that song and similar tracks the group recorded.

In an interesting twist, the name of their debut album, Heavy, with the term "heavy," meaning things of a deep or thoughtful nature, was an important element early formation of heavy metal music, a form of music that was known for tackling issues such as with war, environmental destruction, substance abuse, and other matters of a "heavy" nature.

Their most successful period was during the late 1960's, and the group has reinvented itself a number times with different members. TV Video Channel VH1 ranks them as number 19 on their own list of top 100 "one-hit" wonders. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is the 31st best-selling album in the world, selling more than 25 million copies.
