Janis Lyn Joplin was an singer, songwriter, and music arranger, from Port Arthur, Texas. She rose to fame in the late 1960's as the lead singer of the group "Big Brother and the Holding Company," and later she went on to become a successful solo artist.

Janis Joplin died on October 4, 1970, the result -- like too many other artists and performers -- of a drug overdose.

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked her at number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and she was listed at number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
