Born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942, Jimi Hendrix was an talented guitarist, singer and songwriter. After early success in Europe, he found popularity in the United States after his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, he went on to headline at the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival in New York State and at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.
Hendrix contributed much to the development of rock and roll guitar technique and adopted the technique of using guitar feedback to enhance his signature sound. Hendrix was influenced by blues artists such as B. B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, and Elmore James, as well as R&B and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper.
Hendrix died on September 18, 1970 as a result of circumstances that were never completely clear, but it appeared likely that the consumption of drugs and alcohol may have been the cause.
Hendrix was the recipient of many of the most prestigious rock music awards of his time, and has been posthumously awarded many more, including being inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone magazine named Hendrix the top guitarist on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.
