John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 and was rock musician, vocalist, and songwriter who attained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of "The Beatles." Lennon and Paul McCartney made up one of the most influential songwriting partnerships and wrote some of the most popular music in rock and roll history.
He was a controversial figure through his work as a peace activist and artist. After The Beatles broke up, Lennon enjoyed a successful solo career with albums as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine and well-known songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". After a his "retirement" between the years 1976 and 1980, Lennon staged a comeback with a new album called Double Fantasy, which would win the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
On December 8, 1980 Lennon was murdered by in front of his own building by a mentally disturbed individual by the name of Mark David Chapman. Ironically, when he was asked once how he thought he might die he replied, "I'll probably be popped off by some loony."
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lennon number 38 on its list of "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time" and ranked "The Beatles" at number one. He was also ranked fifth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone in 2009. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
