"Rush" is a Canadian rock trio that was originally formed in August 1968, in the Willowdale neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. Made up of bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist Geddy (Gary) Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer/lyricist Neil Peart, the group has garnered a loyal fan base worldwide and is known for their lack of popularity with some of the more "mainstream" critics and publications, such as Rolling Stone, which only recently seemed to acknowledge the group with a feature story.
Since the release of the band's self-titled debut album in March 1974, "Rush" has become known for the exceptional instrumental skills of its members, complicated compositions, and eclectic lyrics which have drawn heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and libertarian philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental issues.
Musically, "Rush's" style has evolved significantly over the years, beginning with blues-inspired heavy metal on their early albums, then encompassing hard rock, progressive rock, and a period dominated by synthesizers.
"Rush" has influenced various musical artists, including "Metallica," "The Smashing Pumpkins" and "Primus," as well as progressive metal bands such as "Dream Theater" and "Symphony X." "Rush" has earned for themselves a number of Canadian Juno Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
Over the course of their careers, the members of the group have been acknowledged as being some of the most proficient players on their respective instruments, with each band member earning for himself several awards in magazine readers' polls. Drummer Neil Peart stands out as perhaps the most admired member of the group due to his exceptional talent and technical ability.
"Rush" has recorded an impressive 24 gold and 14 platinum (3 of them multi-platinum) records. According to the RIAA, "Rush's" sales statistics place them fourth behind "The Beatles," "The Rolling Stones" and "Aerosmith" for the most consecutive gold or platinum albums by a rock band.
"Rush" also ranks 78th in U.S. album sales with 25 million units. Although total worldwide album sales are not tracked by any single organization, as of 2004 several industry sources estimated "Rush's" total worldwide album sales at over 40 million. The group recently finished promoting their latest album, Snakes & Arrows with an extensive tour.
