"ZZ Top," a rock trio formed in late 1969 in Houston, TX, includes group members Billy Gibbons (lead vocals, guitar), Dusty Hill (vocals, bass, keyboards), and Frank Beard (drums, percussion). The band holds the distinction of being among the few rock bands still composed of its original recording members for nearly four decades.
"ZZ Top" reached their height of commercial success in the 1970's and 1980's, with many hit songs to their credit,and they remain together today and are still touring and releasing new albums.
Summarizing their music, Cub Koda wrote, "As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists working in the hard rock idiom ... while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support."
Their song lyrics often include sexual innuendo as well as some humor. Almost as well-known as their music is the group's image: Gibbons and Hill are almost always pictured wearing sunglasses, similar, if not matching clothes, and their signature chest-length beards. Ironically, despite his own name, drummer Frank Beard has always remained clean-shaven with the exception of a mustache.
During 1984, the Gillette Company was said to have offered Gibbons and Hill $1 million each to shave their beards for a TV commercial. In their usual wise-cracking style, they declined, saying that, "We're too ugly without 'em".
