Deep Purple, the British hard rock titans who helped invent heavy metal and gave the world anthems like “Smoke on the Water” and “Highway Star,” have just announced a new album. The band has officially announced their 24th studio album, SPLAT!, set for release on July 3 via earMUSIC and once again produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin. Billed as one of their heaviest efforts in years, the record promises a raw, riff-driven blast that blends classic Purple power with fresh urgency. It may be hard to imagine that this new album could sound as good and as genuine as their original work but I say we give them a chance and see how it turns out.

The news arrives as the band—averaging nearly 75 years old—continues to defy retirement rumors with a packed 2026 world tour schedule, including North American dates with special guests Kansas and Jefferson Starship. Far from winding down, Deep Purple is still writing, recording, and rocking and that is pretty impressive for guys that age. I’m a little younger than those guys and can only imagine how tough it would be to go on tour at this age.

Formed in 1968 in Hertford, England, Deep Purple emerged as one of rock’s most influential acts during the late ’60s and early ’70s. Their groundbreaking Mark II lineup, featuring Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on keyboards, Roger Glover on bass, and Ian Paice on drums, delivered landmark albums like Deep Purple in Rock (1970) and Machine Head (1972). That era’s explosive blend of blues, classical, and sheer volume helped birth heavy metal and inspired generations of bands from Metallica to Iron Maiden. The group has weathered multiple lineup changes over five decades, yet their core sound,  blistering organ riffs, thunderous drums, and Gillan’s unmistakable wail has remained unmistakable.

The current Mark IX lineup, stable since 2022, features three original-era veterans alongside longtime collaborators and a fiery new guitarist. Ian Gillan (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums) anchor the group, joined by keyboard maestro Don Airey and Northern Irish guitarist Simon McBride, who stepped in after Steve Morse’s departure to care for family. McBride’s blistering style has injected fresh energy, making SPLAT! his second studio outing with the band after 2024’s =1.

Lyrically, Gillan has teased an ambitious concept: a “loose conceptual idea of the end of humanity” that is surprisingly optimistic. It explores humanity’s metamorphosis into a metaphysical next incarnation rather than doom and gloom. Tracks like the title song “Splat!” and “Arrogant Boy” reportedly capture the band’s classic mix of fun, fury, and tongue-in-cheek swagger. Pre-orders already offer everything from purple vinyl to lavish box sets packed with live cuts and signed artwork.

For a band that once joked about “The Long Goodbye” tour, SPLAT! proves Deep Purple still has plenty of smoke (and fire) left in the tank. Nearly six decades after their debut, they remain one of rock’s most enduring forces, proving that true legends don’t fade, they just get louder. Fans can expect the full sonic assault this July, with tickets for the accompanying tour already being purchased. Rock on, Purple. The riff never dies.
