Given the fact that we’ve been hearing a bit more Journey news recently, perhaps it should not be a surprise to learn that the group is gearing up for what sounds like a pretty ambitious tour starting early next year. The “Final Frontier Tour” will start on February 28 at Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. From there the tour will move on for performances in another 59 North American locations, including four dates in Canada.

For a group that has been around for over 50 years, it’s pretty amazing for them to be planning a 60-city tour. The youngest member of the group, Arnel Pineda is 58 years old while the oldest, Jonathan Cain, is 75, so we’re not talking about a bunch of young bucks here. And as a person of a certain age myself, I know that the same energy and enthusiasm that was abundant in youth just isn’t there in our later years. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of putting on a great show for their loyal fans.

After five decades, Neal Schon is the only true founding member that remains, although both Jonathan Cain (1980–present) and Dean Castronovo (1998–2015, 2021-present) are long-time members of the group. Frontman Arnel Pineda has been with the group since 2007 while both Jason Derlatka and Todd Jensen are the relative new-comers and have only been on board since 2021.

Some fans may not consider this group to be “Journey” and although I am somewhat sympathetic to that position, I still think it’s pretty cool to see these guys hitting the road to bring so many beloved radio hits to their fans in live performances. Despite the absence of members like Steve Perry and Ross Valory, I do not doubt that the current line-up is capable of putting on a great show with a sound as close to the “classic” Journey as one is likely to hear anywhere.

Fans that manage to snag tickets can expect to hear Journey classics such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Separate Ways,” “Faithfully,” and “Lights.” Deeper cuts will not be left out in the cold according the Schon who said, “This tour is our heartfelt thank you to the fans who’ve been with us every step of the way, through every song, every era, every high and low. We’re pulling out all the stops with a brand-new production, the hits, the deep cuts, the energy, the spectacle. It’s a full-circle celebration of the music that’s brought us all together.”

Tickets go on sale on Friday, November 14 and are probably going to go fast. I hesitate to speculate about the ticket prices in the wake of the fan uproar over prices for the tickets to the upcoming RUSH shows and hope that fans won’t have to sell their car or mortgage their home to get a seat.

The announcement from the band seems to be a mix of good and bad news. The good news is that they are hitting the road and that these 60 dates were referred to as the “first 60 shows,” hinting that there may be a second leg planned. The bad news is not something that comes as a surprise. The announcement also states that this will be the group’s final tour.

As sad as it is to see an iconic group like Journey come to an end, it’s understandable after some five decades and considering that some of the key players are in their seventies. It seems increasingly common these days to see well-known rockers hitting the road in their seventies and eighties but one has to appreciate the desire to retire and take it easy after so many years in the business. I’m sure touring and playing live is not as easy as they make it look.

As another iconic classic rock group prepares to embark on their farewell tour, I suppose fans can take some comfort in the fact that their music is likely to endure for decades to come. Their favorite songs are as close as their chosen device, whether that’s an “old school” hi-fi system with vinyl records or an online streaming service. There really is no reason to stop believin’ when out favorite music is still available to us whenever we want to enjoy it.
