R.E.M. To Rock XM Radio
— April 3, 2008 0 40Iconic American rockers R.E.M. will headline XM’s “Offsite,” featuring an exclusive hour of song performances from their new album, Accelerate.
Airing April 6 at 10:00 p.m. ET, "R.E.M. Offsite" will also include an in-depth interview with Michael Stipe, Mike Mills and Peter Buck, spanning politics, their current music obsessions, touring set lists and more.
Among other things, you will hear R.E.M. comment on their favorite songs to perform:
Michael Stipe – “It’s not really old school but ‘Electron Blue’ off of the last record is one of my favorite recorded songs, like probably in my top ten of favorite recorded REM songs. And performing it live was always an incredible challenge because it’s not easy to sing. But when I hit it right I knew it. I could feel it in the moment. There’s nothing more that you can ask — there’s nothing more that you can ask for when performing than to really be in that moment where you know that everything’s clicking as it should.”
Peter Buck – “Well I always liked “[Disturbance at] Heron House” because we did it on the one tour that the record was on and we never really played it again. So if we play it once or twice a year it’s still really fresh to me because I haven’t really worn it out. I mean we played it in ’87. That was it.”
Mike Mills – “I always bring up ‘I Believe’ because I know how hard it is for Michael to sing it. [Stipe Laughs] No, it’s — to me it’s a really fun bass line and it’s a song I’ve just always loved so it’s really fun to bring that one out.”
“R.E.M. Offsite” premieres Sunday, April 6 at 10:00 p.m. ET on XM’s modern alternative channel “Ethel” (XM 47). Offsite, which airs weekly on XM 47, features conversations with and performances by current artists recorded on location across the country; Radiohead, Bloc Party, Kings of Leon, Panic! At the Disco and Hot Hot Heat are among the bands that have participated.
